Pastor Madelyn D. Manning is becoming known
as a woman after Gods own heart. She is
full of spiritual discernment and leadership as well as gifted
to partner alongside her husband in pastoral ministry. She was
born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and raised in Jackson, Mississippi. After
receiving Christ at age 16, she purposed in her heart that her
life would “make a difference for Christ.” Initially,
she believed that she would impact the political and legal systems
of her community. And for a time, she was able to make her
mark in these areas.
Pastor Madelyn graduated from Anderson University with a Bachelors
degree in Political Science and Economics in June 1992. With
the support of her husband, Pastor Madelyn furthered her education
by graduating from American University, Washington College of Law
in December 1996. She is a licensed attorney in Ohio and has
practiced law in the banking field as well as the criminal justice
system. Pastor Madelyn’s heart has always centered on
allowing Christ to be glorified in and through her legal career
as well as in ministry in the church. As she worked in her
full-time legal profession, she served at night and on weekends
in ministry in the local church. While Pastor Kerwin served
in various pastoral roles, Pastor Madelyn always joined him in ministry
in various leadership roles, such as: a Covering Pastor of
Small Groups, Worship Leader, Bible Study Teacher and Youth Leader.
Pastor Madelyn is a gracious woman of God that has influenced many
persons of all ages, backgrounds and races to trust God and fulfill
His purposes in their life.
When and how did they become Pastors of this church?
In January of 2000, Pastor Kerwin heard the Lord say, “prepare
yourself to pastor”. He had known in his heart that
a time would come for them to pastor a church of their own. They
had faithfully served in various leadership roles of great responsibility
within their church, but now the Lord was leading them to shepherd
their own flock.
Without any other instructions, he began to pray, develop and fine-tune
every aspect of his life and ministry. During that time (August
2000), Pastor Tyrone Cushman approached him on Zion’s Hill
about the possibility of succeeding him as Senior Pastor in Pasadena,
California. Pastor Kerwin’s response was simply – “I’m
open.” After coming to preach and meet the members of
Pasadena Church in November of 2000, Pastor Kerwin went alone on
a 3 day fasting and prayer retreat to Denver, Colorado at Prayer
Mountain. Pregnant with their first child, Madelyn stayed
home and also fervently prayed. Meanwhile, at Prayer Mountain,
Pastor Kerwin pleaded with God to show him the way and direct their
path. The Holy Spirit spoke to him and opened the scriptures
to him to confirm what He was directing. At the end of the
fasting and prayer retreat, both Pastors Kerwin and Madelyn were
in strong agreement that God was leading their family to Pasadena,
California.
After much prayer and fasting by both parties, the church extended
the call for him to be their Senior Pastor in January of 2001. Although
it was not easy to leave the comforts of home, because of the assurance
that this is where they were to serve, Pastors Kerwin and Madelyn
Manning moved from Toledo, Ohio to Southern California with their
10 week old baby (Madison) and began ministry on Easter Sunday 2001. At
that time, the membership of the church was 99% African-American
and numbered approximately 100, including children. However,
the fresh visionary leadership of Pastors Kerwin and Madelyn, brought
new life and vitality to the congregation. By the grace of
God and their intentional openness, the church has transformed into
a diverse congregation representing people from a variety of backgrounds,
nations, races and ages. The church is becoming known for
its spirit of worship, life-transforming preaching, generosity to
the poor, faith in the goodness of God and warm Christian love.
Initially, Pastor Madelyn assumed the traditional role of “First
Lady” while God dealt with her regarding the call on her life
to full-time pastoral ministry alongside her husband. Even
though Pastor Kerwin believed from the beginning that this was the
will of the Lord, he patiently waited for Pastor Madelyn to process
the way God was leading their family. Later in October of
that year, Pastor Madelyn officially accepted the call to ministry
in partnership with Pastor Kerwin and was ordained to ministry on
October 4, 2002. The church warmly embraced this new, dynamic
pastoral partnership with excitement believing it is the will of
God for this house.
The pastors and members of Pasadena Church have a confident vision
of faith for compassionately impacting our immediate community in
Pasadena, the greater Los Angeles area, the Southern California
region, and other nations as the Holy Spirit directs.
